Before proceeding with the removal of breast implants, several pre-operative appointments are scheduled to explain the procedure in detail to the patient and discuss post-operative care. These initial consultations allow the patient to address any concerns and ensure that the procedure can be conducted under optimal conditions.
The surgery takes place in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia, in the operating room.
During the operation, the plastic surgeon makes incisions to access the implants, carefully removes them, and takes measures to minimize damage to surrounding tissues. Incisions are often made through existing scars (around the areolas, under the breast, or in the natural fold of the breast).
After removing the implants, the surgeon may also perform a capsulectomy, which involves removing the fibrous capsule that forms around the implant. Sometimes, this capsule naturally forms as a reaction to the implant, but in some cases, it can contract, causing pain, breast distortion, or implant hardening, which are possible reasons for removal.
In some instances, breast implant removal may be followed by a breast lift procedure to restore breast shape and firmness.
Once the operation is completed, the surgeon closes the incisions using sutures.
