Cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a very common procedure. It corrects, in a very natural way, excess skin on the upper eyelids and “bags” under the lower eyelids.

Overview of blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery)

Cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) rejuvenates and enhances the appearance of the eyes without altering their natural expression. As we age, the eyelids undergo changes, including:

  • Undereye bags that can only be corrected through surgery
  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids
  • Fat deposits on both the lower and upper eyelids

Eyelid surgery is a precise procedure that delivers excellent results with great subtlety.

Procedure for eyelid surgery

1. Upper eyelid surgery (upper blepharoplasty)

The procedure is performed in the operating room and can be done under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference.

An incision is made along the upper eyelid to remove excess skin. Sometimes, a fat pad (usually internal) on the upper eyelid is also removed. The incision is placed in the natural fold of the eyelid, which helps conceal the scar.

This surgery effectively corrects the appearance of “droopy eyelids,” which often gives a tired look.

2. Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty)

This procedure is also performed in the operating room and can be done under local or general anesthesia, based on the patient’s choice.

For isolated fat removal from the lower eyelid, an incision is made on the inner surface of the eyelid, known as transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which leaves no visible scar.

If excess skin on the lower eyelid also needs correction, a very discreet incision is made along the lash line to remove the surplus skin.

The procedure for eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Before undergoing blepharoplasty, a comprehensive evaluation by an ophthalmologist is necessary to rule out any surgical contraindications.

On the day of the procedure, the patient arrives at the clinic in the morning and typically goes home the same day (outpatient surgery) or the following day, depending on the type of blepharoplasty performed. An upper or lower blepharoplasty generally takes about 1 hour. Both procedures can also be combined into a single operative session.

Recovery after eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

After blepharoplasty, the recovery is generally straightforward. If sutures are placed, they will need to be removed by your cosmetic surgeon 4 to 5 days after the procedure. Regular application of cold compresses is recommended to reduce swelling following blepharoplasty.

The final results of blepharoplasty can be visible after about 2 months. It is advisable to plan for a period of downtime ranging from 4 to 7 days.
