A breast implant rupture occurs when the outer shell of the implant tears, allowing its contents to escape. There are two main types of breast implants: those filled with saline solution and those filled with silicone gel. Ruptures can be classified into two categories:
- Intracapsular, when the silicone gel remains contained within the fibrous capsule that the body forms around the implant
- Extracapsular, when silicone leaks into the surrounding breast tissue
